Overview

Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education is a priority. In the U.S., STEM occupations are expected to grow 1.7 times faster than non-STEM occupations from 2008 to 2018 (Office of Science and Technology and Policy). At all levels of educational attainment, STEM job holders can earn 11% higher wages compared with their same-degree counterparts in other jobs (STEM Education Coalition). You can meet the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and Common Core Standards by supplementing STEM instruction in your lesson plans. STEM - Science

Science
Biotechnology incorporates all aspects of science, not just biology. It is important for students to understand the relatedness of each branch of science. Current educational standards, including the Common Core Standards and NGSS, stress this continuum. There is now a greater emphasis on experimental paradigms and critical evaluation of data and conclusions. The components of the Biotechnology Explorer™ program can easily be integrated into your curriculum and assist you in meeting the goals of the Common Core Standards and NGSS. The Bio-Rad program emphasizes real-life research topics and data analysis.

STEM - Technology

Technology
The Biotechnology Explorer program provides students with experience using the tools that are important in modern biological science. The hands-on approach allows students to see the practical uses of a wide range of biotechnology tools. Students gain an understanding of both the advantages and the practical limitations of individual technologies. A range of materials such as tutorials and PowerPoint presentations are provided on Bio-Rad.com to assist you in teaching different aspects of various technologies.

STEM - Engineering

Engineering
Until recently, many students learned very little about any of the branches of engineering. This has in part led to a shortage of applicants to fill available engineering positions. The Biotechnology Explorer program provides experiences in several branches of engineering, helping you to integrate some basic engineering topics into your curriculum. Bioengineering, which includes genetic engineering, is central to a range of kits and modules. Parts of the program can assist you in incorporating other engineering branches, such as electrical engineering and agricultural engineering, into your lesson plans.

STEM - Mathematics

Mathematics
As with other branches of science, the newest teaching standards place a greater emphasis on understanding how mathematics applies to real-word situations. Mathematical principles are reinforced throughout the Biotechnology Explorer program. In going through the activities in the program, students are called upon to perform a range of mathematical operations, including calculations, simple statistics, and graphing results.
