Principle
Reading and identification of L. monocytogenes are easy due to the unique chromogenic principle (PI-PLC activity) of RAPID'L.mono medium and the fermentation of a sugar (xylose)
- L. monocytogenes (PIPLC+/xylose-) forms blue colonies
- L. ivanovii (PIPLC+/xylose+) forms blue colonies with a yellow halo
- Other Listeria spp. (PIPLC-/xylose+ or -) form white colonies with or without a yellow halo
RAPID'L.mono medium is very specific and inhibits the growth of other bacteria and yeasts.
The rhamnose test (< 6hr) and spot inoculation on Agar Listeria (AL agar) have been validated for confirmation of colonies grown on RAPID'L.mono medium.
Other Applications of RAPID'L.mono Medium
- As a second selective medium in different standardized protocols (for example, the ISO 11290 reference method)

Ordering Information
RAPID'L.mono Medium is offered as ready-to-use plates (3563964) or as a dehydrated agar base (3564293).
When using the dehydrated broth base, RAPID'L.mono Supplement 1 (3564294) and RAPID'L.mono Supplement 2 (3564746) need to be added to the molten agar prior to pouring plates.
For convenience, RAPID'L.mono Medium is also available as a kit (3555294) comprising 190 ml of medium and one vial of each supplement.
