Description
Description
Use TTC (triphenyltetrazolium chloride) 0.2%, a redox indicator, as a supplement to agar to assist in the detection and identification of E. coli, Enterobacter aerogenes, and Enterococci. Both E. coli and Enterobacter aerogenes form yellow colonies. Enterococci and any other coliforms, including non-lactose fermenters, reduce TTC to triphenol formazan resulting in red or purple colonies.
TTC can be added to Slanetz and Bartley Agar where the formation of red or purple colonies indicates Enterococci. Additionally, TTC is a component of TTC Tergitol 7 Agar Plates, which are used for the detection and enumeration of coliforms in drinking water, other types of water samples, and foodstuffs.
