Description
Use BGBLB (Brilliant Green Bile Lactose Broth) for the presumptive identification and enrichment of total coliforms, including thermotolerant coliforms in water and food products including dairy products. Presence of coliforms is indicated by growth and generation of gas.
BGBLB (Brilliant Green Bile Lactose Broth) contains both ox bile and brilliant green dye, which suppress the growth of gram-positive bacteria as well as many gram-negative bacteria. Coliforms are resistant to these inhibitors. Further, the formation of gas indicates that lactose fermentation is occurring. The concentration of brilliant green dye has been optimized to suppress the growth of other lactose fermenting bacteria such as Clostridium spp. and bile salts prevent swarming of Proteus spp.
