Description
Description
Use BEA (Bile Esculin Azide) Agar as a selective medium for the identification of Enterococci. This media contains bile to suppress the growth of gram-positive bacteria as well as many gram-negative bacteria. Sodium azide also suppresses growth of gram-negative bacteria. Enterococci hydrolyze esculin to esculetin, which complexes with ferric citrate to produce insoluble iron salts, resulting in the media becoming brown-black or black.
