Syphilis Testing for Multiple Clinical Settings

In most laboratory settings, syphilis diagnosis is based upon two types of serological tests:

• Treponemal tests detect antibodies to Treponema pallidum, the bacterium that causes syphilis. They can be performed with enzyme immunoassays (EIA), agglutination methodologies (TPHA), or multiplex immunoassays.
• Non-treponemal tests detect nonspecific antibodies that could indicate syphilis infection. They can be performed with agglutination methodologies (RPR or VDRL) or multiplex immunoassays.

Bio-Rad offers solutions to aid in the diagnosis of patients where syphilis infection is suspected, as well as for the screening of blood donations. Manual and automated methods are available.

Syphilis Enzyme Immunoassays (EIA)

The Syphilis Total Antibody Assay and Syphilis IgM EIA Assay are treponemal tests that detect syphilis antibodies across the various stages of infection. These assays can be used manually or with fully automated systems.

Syphilis Agglutination Assays

The TPHA Assay is a treponemal test that detects antibodies to infection and can also be used for the screening of blood donations.
The RPR Assay is a non-treponemal test that serves as an indirect marker measuring host immune response to infection.
