The Analytical Scientist Innovation Awards 2025 Winner

HERCULES, Calif.–Bio-Rad Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE: BIO and BIO.B), a global leader in life science research and clinical diagnostics products, today announced that its Nuvia wPrime 2A Media has received a 2025 Innovation Award from The Analytical Scientist. Nuvia wPrime 2A Media, launched in January 2025, is a tunable weak anion exchange and hydrophobic interaction (AEX-HIC) mixed-mode chromatography resin designed for small- to large-scale biomolecule purification.

The Analytical Scientist, a leading publication for analytical sciences, technology and innovation, issues its annual Innovation Awards to recognize the latest, technologies, instrument advances or software solutions that are revolutionizing analytical sciences as well as the teams behind the products.

Built upon Bio-Rad’s Nuvia bead technology, featuring a durable polyacrylamide (acrylamide polymer) bead matrix, Nuvia wPrime 2A Media maintains performance under high flow rates and harsh cleaning conditions, ensuring scalable, reproducible purification for research and biotherapeutic applications. Unlike strong AEX and AEX-HIC resins that remain fully positively charged across pH ranges, Nuvia wPrime 2A Media is a tunable mixed-mode chromatography resin, whereby its weak AEX component can be modulated by adjusting the pH, enabling milder elution conditions and superior control over binding/elution behavior, allowing the purification of otherwise difficult-to-separate biomolecules from other impurities.

As a mixed-mode resin, Nuvia wPrime 2A Media allows for the use of multiple interaction modes (AEX-HIC) in a single step, enabling process intensification by reducing the number of chromatography and purification steps, while improving process economics through lower processing time, material use, labor and operating costs. Its robustness over multiple cycles also supports improved sustainability and reproducibility in regulated environments.

"Receiving the prestigious Innovation Award from The Analytical Scientist reflects Bio-Rad’s position as a leader in multimodal chromatography technology and is a testament to our continued commitment to innovation and sustainability as well as our dedication to advancing the purification efforts of researchers and therapy manufacturers," said Diab Elmashni, Director, Process Chromatography Business, Bio-Rad Laboratories. "Nuvia wPrime 2A Media is unique to the market as the only tunable weak anion exchange-hydrophobic interaction chromatography (AEX-HIC) resin that can be scaled up and used in large-format and high-productivity manufacturing workflows. It has already helped biopharma companies to increase yield of certain classes of therapies, including antibody and adeno-associated virus (AAV) gene therapies."
