The Medicine Maker Innovation Awards 2025

HERCULES, Calif.–Bio-Rad Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE: BIO and BIO.B), a global leader in life science research and clinical diagnostics products, today announced that its Nuvia™ wPrime 2A Media, the company’s newest chromatography resin for bioprocessing, has been selected for The Medicine Maker 2025 Innovation Awards. The Medicine Maker, a global publication covering key topics and trends in drug development and manufacturing, releases its Innovation Awards annually to showcase the year’s most significant technological advances for the pharma and biopharma industry. Nuvia wPrime 2A resin was selected for the Innovation Awards by a panel of industry-expert judges.

Launched in January 2025, Nuvia wPrime 2A Media, a tunable weak anion exchange and hydrophobic interaction (AEX-HIC) mixed-mode chromatography resin, can be used in the purification of both established therapeutics, such as monoclonal antibodies (mAb) and virus-based therapies, as well as diverse new constructs in development.

Unlike "strong" AEX and AEX-HIC resins, which retain a full positive charge across wide pH ranges, Nuvia wPrime 2A Media’s "weak" AEX mode strength can be adjusted to meet specific requirements. This offers a flexible design space for developing methods that achieve both high yields and purity simultaneously. Built upon Bio-Rad’s Nuvia bead technology, and featuring a durable polyacrylamide bead matrix, Nuvia wPrime 2A Media exhibits high chemical and mechanical stability that maintains performance under high flow rates and harsh cleaning conditions, ensuring scalable, reproducible, and cost-effective purification on a lab or manufacturing scale. As a mixed-mode resin, Nuvia wPrime 2A Resin can be used for process intensification to reduce the number of chromatography and purification workflow steps, reducing processing time and waste, as well as minimizing material, labor, and operating costs. The resin meets industrial demands for robust performance, regulatory compliance, and security of supply.

"Being selected for The Medicine Maker’s Innovation Awards is testament to what we set out to build—a solution born directly from deep conversations with researchers and biopharma process engineers," said Diab Elmashni, Director, Process Chromatography Business, Bio-Rad Laboratories. "By combining tunable weak anion exchange with hydrophobic interaction, Nuvia wPrime 2A Media addresses real-world challenges by offering our customers greater control, scalability, gentler elution conditions, and reduced processing steps without compromising performance, reliability, or sustainability."
