Bio-Rad awarded 25 scholarships to teachers from underrepresented communities to attended the NSTA virtual conference.

HERCULES, Calif. –November 25, 2020–Bio-Rad Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE: BIO and BIOb) ), a global leader of life science research and clinical diagnostic products, has awarded 25 scholarships to U.S. high school and undergraduate teachers from underrepresented communities to attend the National Science Teaching Association (NSTA) virtual conference, NSTA Engage: Fall20, November 13–15.

Several hundred high school and undergraduate biology and life science teachers applied for the scholarships and 25 winners were selected. Applicants were required to meet certain criteria and priority was placed on need. The criteria included that applicants teach as a member of an underserved (or underrepresented) community at an institution with high numbers (or high percentages) of students from low-income families; they teach students from military-connected families, under-resourced communities, or rural communities; or they teach students who are learning English as a second language.

"My school serves a demographic where more than 80 percent of the students are from low-income families," remarked one of the applicants. “These students deserve to have a rigorous and engaging science education experience to help them lay the foundation for their future endeavors and interests. I want to be part of the solution in helping to break the compounding factors that have resulted in the lack of diversity in science fields,” the applicant added.

The NSTA Engage: Fall20 conference brings together thousands of science teachers from across the U.S. for three days of professional development and networking. Bio-Rad has been a sponsor of NSTA conferences for more than 20 years, and the Bio-Rad Explorer program will present nine professional development workshops during the conference.

Bio-Rad also offers the Ron Mardigian Memorial Bio-Rad Explorer Award, which provides winners with travel expenses and the registration fee to attend the NSTA National conference in person as well as $2,500 in Bio-Rad products to contribute to their teaching curriculum.
