Laboratory Impact of Daratumumab Interference
Daratumumab, an anti-CD38 monoclonal antibody used to treat multiple myeloma, can interfere with pretransfusion testing by causing panreactivity in indirect antiglobulin tests (IAT) and masking clinically significant antibodies. Standard mitigation using dithiothreitol (DTT)-treated RBCs is labor-intensive and may destroy important antigens (e.g., Kell), potentially delaying urgent testing. In this webinar, Molly Rutherford will discuss the impact of daratumumab on laboratory workflow and blood provision, review current mitigation strategies, and present the evaluation results of a new reagent, DaraClear.

Molly Rutherford has a strong background in transfusion science and is currently completing her IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Haematology alongside the BBTS Specialist Certificate in Transfusion Practice. Following on from her undergraduate research project, Molly has collaborated with Bio-Rad on the clinical validation of a novel technique within a diagnostic laboratory setting to help mitigate therapeutic monoclonal antibody interference in pre-transfusion testing. She has a particular interest in immunohaematology techniques and emerging developments in red cell serology, with a focus on improving transfusion safety, laboratory practice, and patient outcomes.
