This gene encodes a class E basic helix-loop-helix type transcription factor. The encoded protein is a key regulator of the mammalian circadian clock. A dominant mutation in this gene results in a short sleep phenotype. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding multiple isoforms have been observed for this gene.
