Gene Information

This gene encodes the classic myelin basic protein, a major constituent of the myelin sheath of oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells in the nervous system. In humans (see PubMed ID 7504278), related transcripts found in bone marrow and the immune system arise from a longer form of the gene (referred to as Golli-MBP), which includes additional exons upstream of the exons of classic myelin basic protein. Similar to human, the zebrafish gene is characterized by alternate transcription start sites and splicing, although the full-length nature of all has yet to be determined.
