Ovarian Tumor Antigen (CA 125)

A large glycoprotein of 200 kD in monomeric form associated with cells of ovarian carcinoma, the CA 125 is a cell surface glycoprotein located on the MUC16 molecule of the ovarian tumors. It is a mucin-like glycoprotein originally identified in human ovarian tumors and typically exists in the circulatory system as large aggregates. CA 125 is indicated for use in the detection of residual ovarian carcinoma in patients who have undergone first-line therapy and should be considered for a diagnostic second-look procedure. Approved use for clinical monitoring post therapy and early detection of relapsed ovarian cancers of serous, endometrial and clear cell types.
