Question:

Is SYPRO Ruby Protein Gel Stain as sensitive as Bio-Rad Silver Stain?

Answer:

Bio-Rad Silver Stain can detect proteins in the range of 0.1 to 1.0 ng per band or spot. SYPRO Ruby Protein Gel Stain (1703126, 1703125 and 1703138) can detect protein in the range of 1–10 ng, so they are approximately equivalent.

Silver stain can be more sensitive than SYPRO Ruby Protein Gel Stain, but SYPRO Ruby protein gel stain is much more sensitive than Coomassie Brilliant Blue, Zinc stain and colloidal Coomassie Brilliant Blue.

Note that each protein will stain differently with the different stains, and a true comparison of the sensitivity of a stain with a mixture of proteins on a gel depends on how much of the stain each protein will bind. Since this varies so much from protein to protein, the best option is to try the stain and see if it is more sensitive than your current stain.
