1. Genes in a Bottle™ Kit
How do you fit a person in a bottle? Your DNA contains all of the information that makes you who you are. Isolate your own DNA and capture your unique essence in a stylish necklace!
2. ELISA and Swine Flu
What do pigs and people have in common? Swine flu is thought to be a rearrangement of four known strains of influenza A virus: one normally infecting humans, one normally infecting birds, and two normally infecting pigs (swine). The new strain, H1N1, is transmitted from person to person. An ELISA assay is a powerful diagnostic tool that enables the rapid detection of disease-causing agents such as H1N1. Discover how this disease is transmitted using a hands-on ELISA experiment and also learn how vaccinations work.
3. Light Up Your Classroom with pGLO™ Transformation
What happens when you cross a jellyfish with E. coli? You can create your own pGLO green glowing bacteria! By the end of this workshop, you'll become an actual genetic engineer — modifying genes and transforming bacteria with the green fluorescent protein (GFP). AP Biology Lab 6. 4. What's Next after pGLO Bacterial Transformation?

5. Forensic DNA Fingerprinting Kit
Use restriction enzyme digestion and DNA gel electrophoresis (popularly known as DNA fingerprinting) to determine, based on DNA evidence, which of a number of suspects could have committed the crime. Which human DNA sequences are used in crime scene investigations and why? In this hands-on workshop, you will learn to use the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and gel electrophoresis to identify which suspects can be exonerated — based on DNA evidence. Learn how the statistics of chance are integral to modern DNA fingerprinting.
8. GMO Investigator™ Kit
Have your favorite foods been genetically modified (GM)? This hands-on workshop teaches the basics of DNA extraction, PCR, and gel electrophoresis and how these techniques are used to test common grocery store food products for the presence of GM foods. Are GM crops a good thing? Regardless of where you stand in the GM debate, wouldn't it be interesting to know which of the foods that you eat are GM?
9. Bored with PCR? Take PCR to the Next Level!
Learn how to clone a gene when you don't know the DNA sequence. In this workshop, you will learn how to use degenerate and nested PCR primers to amplify the highly conserved housekeeping gene GAPDH as the first step towards cloning.
10. Is There Molecular Evidence for Evolution? Protein Profiler Kit
In this hands-on workshop, you will generate protein profiles from distant and closely related species of fish using gel electrophoresis. Test the hypothesis that protein profiles are indicators of evolutionary relatedness and construct cladograms from your own gel results. Learn about proteomics and explore the central mantra of biology: DNA > RNA > Protein > Trait.
11. Comparative Proteomics Kit II: Western Blot Module
Take protein electrophoresis to the next level and explore evolution using western blotting to specifically identify a protein using immunodetection. In this workshop, you will identify the myosin light chain protein from hundreds of other muscle proteins present in prerun protein profile polyacrylamide gels. Attendance in the Protein Profiler workshop is highly recommended but not required.
12. Real-Time PCR Using Classroom Kits
Real-time PCR is fast becoming one of the most vital tools in medical and genomic research. In this workshop, you will understand the molecular basis of DNA amplification using real-time technology and discover the different applications for PCR and real-time PCR. Give your students a competitive edge in the real world of biotechnology research.
13. Which Biomolecule Will Win the Chromatography Race?
Finally, a quick, easy, visual way to teach the principals of chromatography! This 45-minute lab can be prepared in 5 minutes. Chromatography is a powerful method for separating complex mixtures into component parts based on molecular properties. You will separate a mixture containing the naturally pigmented molecules vitamin B12 and hemoglobin using size exclusion chromatography.
14. Microbes and Health: "What Causes Yogurtness?"
Introduce your students to microbiology using yogurt! In this lab, students isolate bacteria from yogurt on a Petri dish and then use those strains to inoculate fresh milk to produce more yogurt. Learn about disease transmission and progression, and apply Koch's postulates. Teach microbiology, microscopy, health science, and biology with one lab.

Explore the nutritional value of common beverages from milk to sports drinks using the Bradford assay. This versatile lab can be done qualitatively or quantitatively with a spectrophotometer. This is the perfect lab to integrate physics, chemistry, and biology.

17. Determine Your Genotype with PCR
Finally, a wet lab to apply the Hardy-Weinberg principle! Learn how trace amounts of DNA are used by forensic scientists to identify genetic ancestry. Using the PV92 PCR Informatics kit, you will extract the DNA from your own cheek cells (or hair follicles) and use the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and gel electrophoresis to identify inherited variations in your own genotype at the PV92 locus. Learn how to apply DNA fingerprinting to test Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium theory within your own classroom population — and how to go online to compare your classroom results to population data around the world with bioinformatics.

We will use a simple and fast chemotaxis assay to explore worm taste preferences and examine the connection of our worm mutant to human diseases. 31. What Colors Your World? Quick, Easy, and Cheap Biotech Activities for Biology and Chemistry (1.5 hr)
In this hands-on workshop, learn how natural and synthetic pigments can be extracted and separated based upon their molecular properties. These biotechnology separation techniques cut across the chemistry and biology curricula, and are easy to bring into the classroom.
